Historical Record
Following the DMK's 1977 Assembly election defeat, M. Karunanidhi, who had retained his Anna Nagar seat, became the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. He led the DMK's legislative opposition to the M. G. Ramachandran government.
Significance
Despite calls from within the party for his resignation after successive defeats, Karunanidhi retained leadership and shaped the DMK's strategy through its longest stretch in opposition.
