In the early hours of 30 June 2001, former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi was arrested at his Chennai home in a case alleging irregularities of around 12 crore in the construction of Chennai flyovers. Union ministers Murasoli Maran and T. R. Baalu were also detained, the first arrests of sitting union ministers in independent India.
