Historical Record
In April 1977, V. R. Nedunchezhiyan, a senior figure and former Education Minister in the Karunanidhi cabinet, left the DMK along with cabinet colleagues including K. Rajaram, S. Madhavan and P. U. Shanmugam to form the Makkal Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. The breakaway followed the DMK's loss of power and came shortly before the 1977 elections.
Significance
The split weakened the DMK on the eve of the 1977 elections and reflected the organisational strain the party faced after losing power; the Makkal DMK soon merged with the AIADMK, strengthening the rival party.
