In January 2017, with M. Karunanidhi's health declining, the DMK General Council unanimously elected M. K. Stalin as the party's Working President. The newly created post gave Stalin effective day-to-day control of the party while Karunanidhi remained president.

Significance
This was the formal beginning of the leadership transition from Karunanidhi to Stalin, marking the start of the modern Stalin era in the DMK.
