On 28 August 2018, three weeks after Karunanidhi's death, M. K. Stalin was elected unopposed as president of the DMK at the party's General Council meeting. His name was proposed by district secretaries, formally completing the generational transfer of leadership.

Significance
Stalin became only the third president in the DMK's history after C. N. Annadurai and M. Karunanidhi, consolidating undisputed control of the party ahead of the 2019 and 2021 elections.
