Historical Record
The Tamil Nadu Legislative Council was abolished by the M. G. Ramachandran government with effect from 1 November 1986, after Parliament passed the abolition bill. Karunanidhi, then president of the DMK and the Leader of the Opposition in the Council, lost that legislative platform with the upper House's abolition.
Significance
The abolition removed the legislative seat from which Karunanidhi led the opposition, and DMK governments later repeatedly sought to revive the Council, though without success.
