Historical Record

On 12 October 2004 the union government issued a notification recognising Tamil as a Classical Language, the first language so designated by independent India. The DMK had pressed this long-standing demand and secured its inclusion in the UPA's National Common Minimum Programme.

Significance

Fulfilled a key DMK cultural-political demand, enabling central funding for Tamil research and affirming Tamil's antiquity on the national stage.
