Context

Historical Record

The State Planning Commission was constituted in Tamil Nadu on 25 May 1971 under the Chairmanship of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi (Kalaignar). Formed as an advisory body to steer state development planning, it was the first state-level planning entity in Tamil Nadu. Its core mandate included coordinating comprehensive regional development across essential sectors like Agriculture, Industry, and Education, while formulating Five-Year and Annual Plans.

Significance

It institutionalized a structured approach to regional economic development, making Tamil Nadu a pioneer in setting up dedicated state-level planning mechanisms to drive localized social and economic goals.
