Context

Historical Record

On 31 January 1976, during the Emergency, the elected DMK government led by M. Karunanidhi was dismissed under Article 356 on Governor K. K. Shah's report, and President's Rule was imposed on Tamil Nadu. Mass arrests of DMK leaders and workers under MISA followed; a Sarkaria Commission of Inquiry was set up into corruption allegations against the ministry.

Significance

The dismissal abruptly ended the DMK's nine-year run in power and ushered in a long opposition period; it became a defining grievance in DMK political memory.
