Historical Record
In the 1971 Indian general election, contested in alliance with Indira Gandhi's Congress, the DMK won 23 Lok Sabha seats from Tamil Nadu. The alliance gave the DMK a strong presence in Parliament and made it an important supporter of the Congress government at the Centre.
இந்திரா காந்தியின் காங்கிரஸுடன் கூட்டணி அமைத்துப் போட்டியிட்ட 1971 இந்தியப் பொதுத் தேர்தலில், தமிழ்நாட்டிலிருந்து 23 மக்களவை இடங்களைத் திமுக வென்றது. இக்கூட்டணி திமுகவுக்கு நாடாளுமன்றத்தில் வலுவான இருப்பை அளித்து, மத்தியில் காங்கிரஸ் அரசின் முக்கிய ஆதரவாளராக அதை மாற்றியது.
Significance
The result extended the DMK's reach to national politics and underlined its bargaining power with the Centre in the early 1970s.
