Context

Historical Record

After the National Emergency was declared on 25 June 1975, the Karunanidhi-led DMK government in Tamil Nadu declined to enforce many Emergency measures, including full press censorship, and Karunanidhi aligned with Jayaprakash Narayan's anti-Emergency movement. Tamil Nadu became a notable centre of resistance to Emergency rule.

Significance

The DMK's stand made Tamil Nadu one of the few states to openly resist the Emergency and defined the party's civil-liberties record.
