Historical Record
The State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu Limited (SIPCOT) was established in March 1971 under Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi's administration. Created to jumpstart industrial dispersal and catalyze heavy and medium industrial infrastructure, its historic first phase was sanctioned on 20 January 1973 with a 730-acre flagship industrial complex at Ranipet. It has since evolved to manage dozens of industrial parks and multiple Special Economic Zones (SEZs) across Tamil Nadu.
Significance
SIPCOT served as the master architect of Tamil Nadu's industrial decentralization, transforming historically rural and backward areas into globally competitive industrial manufacturing clusters.
