Context

Historical Record

After Annadurai's death, DMK MLAs chose M. Karunanidhi to lead the legislature party on 9 February 1969, and he was sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on 10 February 1969. M. G. Ramachandran's backing was decisive in securing him the post over senior contenders.

Significance

Karunanidhi's elevation began a DMK leadership that would shape Tamil Nadu politics for nearly five decades.
