Context

Historical Record

In 1971 the DMK government increased reservation for Backward Classes from 25 percent to 31 percent and for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes from 16 percent to 18 percent, acting on inputs linked to the Sattanathan Commission's work.

Significance

The hike deepened Tamil Nadu's reservation regime and reinforced the DMK's social-justice positioning in the 1971-1976 term.
