Context

Historical Record

The Samathuvapuram (Periyar Ninaivu Samathuvapuram) equality-village housing scheme, announced in 1997, settled families of all castes and religions together with shared amenities and no discrimination. The first equality village was inaugurated by M. Karunanidhi on 17 August 1998 at Melakottai near Tirumangalam, Madurai; by 2001 about 145 had been established.

Significance

A flagship social-justice experiment in spatial caste integration, embodying the Dravidian movement's ideal of an egalitarian society.
