In April 1974 the DMK government moved a resolution in the Tamil Nadu Assembly urging the Centre to accept the Rajamannar Committee's recommendations on state autonomy and to amend the Constitution towards a genuinely federal system.

The resolution made state autonomy a formal legislative demand of Tamil Nadu and a signature constitutional cause of the DMK.
