Historical Record
The Tamil Nadu Land Reforms (Reduction of Ceiling on Land) Act 1970 (TN Act 17/1970) was passed under Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, deemed to have come into force on 15 February 1970. It significantly modified the previous Kamaraj-era 1961 Act by drastically slashing the maximum agricultural land ceiling for a family from 30 standard acres down to 15 standard acres. This legislative intervention targeted the concentration of agrarian land assets to free up excess real estate for the landless poor.
Significance
By cutting the ceiling limit in half, the DMK government dismantled deeply entrenched feudal land monopolies, accelerating agrarian wealth redistribution and boosting economic security for marginalized agricultural laborers.
