Periyar E.V.R. Nagammaiyar Memorial Free Education Scheme for Girls

Executive Summary

Introduced during the 1989-90 financial year by the DMK government, this scheme exempts girl students from payment of tuition fees for undergraduate college courses, removing a financial barrier to higher education for women. The original income ceiling was a parental annual income below Rs.12,000, later raised to Rs.24,000 in 1996. It is named after E.V.R. Nagammaiyar, a social reformer and wife of Periyar E.V. Ramasamy.
