Free Bus Pass Scheme for Students

Executive Summary

Introduced by the DMK government in 1996-97, this scheme exempted students of government schools and colleges from paying bus fares on ordinary state transport corporation buses, while private school and college students received a 50% concession. It aimed to reduce the financial burden of travel on students and curb school dropouts, particularly in rural areas.
