Executive Summary

Launched in 2010, the Kalaignar Veedu Vazhangum Thittam aimed to replace all huts in rural Tamil Nadu with permanent houses over a six-year period. The first phase planned 3 lakh houses at a cost of about Rs 2,250 crore, providing a subsidy of Rs 75,000 per house. Work orders were issued from July 2010 and the first house was handed over on 9 October 2010. The scheme later continued in restructured form as the Kalaignar Kanavu Illam scheme.
