Free Education up to Pre-University Level

Executive Summary

On assuming office in 1967, the first DMK government under C. N. Annadurai extended free education from the SSLC level up to the pre-university stage. It waived tuition fees for poor students of all castes studying pre-university and pre-technical courses. The measure built on Tamil Nadu's earlier free-education tradition and was later extended further towards graduation level under M. Karunanidhi.

1967ல் பதவியேற்ற சி. என். அண்ணாதுரை தலைமையிலான முதல் திமுக அரசு, இலவசக் கல்வியை எஸ்எஸ்எல்சி நிலையிலிருந்து முன்பல்கலைக்கழக நிலை வரை விரிவுபடுத்தியது. முன்பல்கலைக்கழக மற்றும் முன்தொழில்நுட்பப் படிப்புகளில் பயிலும் அனைத்து சாதி ஏழை மாணவர்களுக்கும் கல்விக் கட்டணம் விலக்கப்பட்டது. தமிழ்நாட்டின் முந்தைய இலவசக் கல்வி மரபை அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்ட இம்முயற்சி, பின்னர் மு. கருணாநிதியின் ஆட்சியில் பட்டப்படிப்பு நிலை வரை மேலும் விரிவாக்கப்பட்டது.
