Historical Record
In January 1968 the Madras (Tamil Nadu) Legislative Assembly passed a resolution under Annadurai rejecting the Centre's three-language formula and adopting a two-language policy of Tamil and English in government schools. Tamil Nadu remains the only Indian state that has never implemented the three-language formula.
Significance
The policy institutionalised the DMK's anti-Hindi-imposition stand into state education and remains a defining marker of Tamil Nadu's linguistic autonomy.
