Historical Record
Following a unanimous Madras Legislative Assembly resolution moved in July 1967, the Madras State (Alteration of Name) Act came into force on 14 January 1969, renaming Madras State as Tamil Nadu. The change took effect just three weeks before Annadurai's death.
Significance
The renaming gave the state a Tamil identity in its very name and was one of the DMK's most symbolically powerful early acts of governance.
