Context

Historical Record

C. N. Annadurai, founder of the DMK and the first Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, died of cancer on 3 February 1969 while in office, aged 59. His funeral in Madras drew an estimated 15 million mourners and is recognised by Guinness World Records as the largest funeral gathering in history.

Significance

Annadurai's death ended the DMK's founding leadership and triggered the transition to M. Karunanidhi, while the unprecedented funeral demonstrated the movement's mass following.
