Historical Record
In the February 1967 Madras State Legislative Assembly election, the DMK-led front under C. N. Annadurai defeated the Indian National Congress, winning around 138 of the 234 seats. It ended decades of Congress rule and made the DMK the first non-Congress party to win a clear single-party majority in an Indian state assembly.
Significance
This victory marked the arrival of Dravidian politics as a governing force and set a lasting template for regional-party power in India.
