Historical Record
The DMK government hosted the Second World Tamil Conference in Madras in January 1968, combining a scholarly conference at the University of Madras with a large public celebration of Tamil art, culture and history. As part of it, statues of major figures in the history of Tamil were unveiled on the Marina beachfront.
Significance
The conference was both a celebration of Tamil heritage and a public assertion of the Dravidian movement's cultural-political agenda from a position of governmental power.
