Context

Historical Record

The Hindu Marriage (Madras / Tamil Nadu Amendment) Act, 1967, which inserted Section 7-A into the Hindu Marriage Act 1955, received Presidential assent on 17 January 1968. It legally recognised 'suyamariyathai' (Self-Respect) and 'seerthiruththa' marriages — solemnised without a priest, holy fire or Brahminical rituals — fulfilling a long-standing Self-Respect Movement demand.

Significance

The amendment turned a core Self-Respect Movement ideal into law, allowing weddings free of caste-priestly control and registering them with full legal validity.
